The Local Government Association of the NT has welcomed the Federal Government’s Budget national
commitment of $2 billion for housing enabling infrastructure which includes $500 million dedicated to
regional Australia.
“This significant investment could not come at a better time for NT local councils who are struggling to do
more with the same, or less money – particularly in regional and remote areas where we have been
calling for greater financial support,” said Local Government Association of the NT President Peter
Pangquee.
The funding will be over four years from 2026-27 for critical infrastructure.
“This will give our councils more confidence to plan for future growth and to work with the NT and
Federal Governments to accelerate housing delivery and increase liveability,” Mr Pangquee said.
He echoed the comments of the Australian Local Government Association President Mayor Burnett who
said earlier this week: “You can’t build homes without the roads, drainage, water connections and
community infrastructure that make new developments possible and liveable.”
Local councils in the NT continue to face escalating costs linked to inflation, construction pressures,
rising fuel prices and the threat of significantly higher energy costs.
“We welcome this investment and look forward to working constructively with the Federal Government
to deliver better housing affordability and availability,” said Mr Pangquee.
