The local government sector is a significant stakeholder in land use planning as, following development, councils typically inherit responsibility for public assets such as roads, parks, community facilities etc. These assets require on-going servicing, maintenance and eventual renewal, which can place a significant burden on councils, many of which operate with limited resources.
