Local government is a major employer in the NT, collectively supporting around 3,000 jobs or about 7% of public sector employment in the NT. The local government sector is often the largest employer of Aboriginal people in regional and remote areas in the NT and it has the highest proportion of Aboriginal employees in the sector nationally.

Local government provides diverse employment opportunities, particularly in regional and remote areas, and there is significant opportunity to enhance regional development through advancement of the local government workforce.
