Waste, Recycling and the Circular Economy

The Circular Economy challenges the traditional linear model of “make, use, dispose” by promoting a system where materials are kept in circulation through strategies such as reducing, reusing, repurposing, repairing and recycling.

LGANT is dedicated to supporting the local government sector transition to a circular economy. This commitment is being advanced through the following initiatives:

Strengthening relationships with the sector, through membership with WRINT (Waste Management Industry NT) and APCO.
Ongoing engagement with peak bodies such as the Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence and Tyre Stewardship Australia.
Participating in working groups with local government, industry and other sectors.
Regular meetings with the NT Government’s Circular Economy Team.
Delivering biennial waste symposiums.
Facilitating workshops with local government and subject matter experts.

Waste Audit Tool Kit

The Northern Territory Government has finalised updates to the Waste Audit Toolkit and associated training materials developed by GHD. These resources are now available for use by NT councils.

The toolkit includes:

A waste audit instructional video.
A detailed instruction manual.
Excel-based audit template.

To begin the process, councils should contact LGANT directly who will provide a Third Party Reliance Deed for signature.
