LGANT develops and advocates policy positions on behalf of its member councils across several areas and works hard to represent their collective views to other spheres of government. Policy priorities and decisions are determined through LGANT General and Board Meetings. Many issues also arise through Northern Territory and Australian government policy and program development.
Our advocacy and policy efforts align with LGANT’s focus areas and are guided by the voice of our members.

A core part of LGANT’s advocacy work is preparing and lodging submissions in response to Northern Territory and Australian Government inquiries, reviews and consultations on behalf of member councils.
These submissions reflect the collective views of the local government sector, informed through consultation and engagement with councils across the Territory. They provide place‑based insights and practical recommendations on proposed legislation, policies, funding models and programs, helping governments understand the real‑world impacts of reform at the local level.
Member councils are encouraged to contribute to consultations that inform LGANT submissions, ensuring local priorities and challenges are accurately represented in government decision‑making.
