Waste, Recycling and the Circular Economy

The Circular Economy challenges the linear economy concept of make, use, dispose. A circular economy aims to keep materials in circulation through reduce, reuse, repurpose, repair and recycle.

LGANT is committed to supporting the local government sector transition to the circular economy and will leverage outcomes via:

• Strengthening relationships with membership to WRINT (Waste Management Industry NT)
• Continued engagement with peak bodies such as Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence and Tyre Stewardship Australia
• Working groups with:

1. local government
2. industry and other sectors

• Regular meetings with the NT Government’s Circular Economy Team
• Biennial symposiums
• Workshops with local government and relevant experts

Some of the benefits of a circular economy for local government are:

• Reduced landfill costs
• Increasing materials recovery
• Improved community amenity

The Northern Territory Government (NTG) has supplied LGANT with a waste audit toolkit and training materials prepared by GHD for use by NT Local Councils.
